10 things to check before the machine arrives on site

The most common cause of lost time on a hire is not the machine itself but a site that is not ready to receive it. Checking the points below before delivery rules out most delays from the start.

• Entrance width and door height. Ask for the machine's stowed dimensions; a machine that won't fit through the door can't get onto site.
• Ground-bearing capacity. The machine's total weight and wheel loading matter, especially on mezzanine floors, car park decks and manhole covers.
• Ground evenness and slope. The maximum slope a machine can work on varies from model to model.
• Ceiling height and overhead obstructions. Cable trays, sprinkler pipes and overhead cranes reduce the working area.
• Distance from power lines. Approach distances to overhead power lines are set by regulations; plan accordingly.
• Unloading area. You need an area where the low-loader can pull up and manoeuvre.
• Charging point. If you are using a battery-powered machine, check that a suitable socket is close to the working area.
• Working hours and permits. Working hours may be restricted in places such as shopping centres, hospitals and residential complexes.
• Operator and certificates. Make sure the people who will operate the machine have been named and hold certificates.
• Site contact. Have someone on hand at delivery to receive the machine and show us the area.
