Battery or diesel? The right power type for indoor and rough-terrain work

6 August 2026 · 5 min read

When you are choosing between the battery and diesel versions of a machine with the same height, the deciding factor is not the brand but the conditions on site. Both have features that cause no trouble in the right place and bring work to a halt in the wrong one.

Battery-powered platforms

  • No exhaust fumes, so no ventilation problems in enclosed spaces.
  • Quiet, so you can work during the day in hospitals, shopping centres and offices that remain in use.
  • Non-marking tyres leave no tyre marks on epoxy or polished concrete floors.
  • Charging time has to be planned. Long shifts may call for top-up charging or a standby machine.
  • Low centre of gravity; designed for work on level ground.

Diesel platforms

  • Works on uneven ground, in mud and on slopes – that is what 4×4 drive and oscillating axles are for.
  • Refuelling takes minutes, so work carries on throughout the shift.
  • This is the class that reaches higher working heights and greater horizontal outreach.
  • Not suitable for indoor use because of emissions and noise.
  • Heavy; check ground-bearing capacity and access width beforehand.

The middle ground: hybrid and indoor/outdoor models

Some models are designed to run in battery mode indoors and on a diesel generator on rough terrain. On construction sites where part of the project is structural work and part is fit-out, a single machine may be able to cover both phases. If that is what you need, tell us and we will list the suitable models in our fleet.

Battery performance in winter

Battery capacity drops in cold weather. If you are using a battery-powered machine outdoors in the winter months, leaving it on charge indoors overnight and planning for slightly shorter working days will make things easier.
